After the last one in 2023 the Tokyo Motor Show is back in 2025, now renamed as the Japan Mobility Show. It is like any major auto show a place where you see some new car launches, some concept cars showcased and a chance for company executives to talk about their vision for the future. This year was no different apart from the name change.
The show is currently under way and the exhibitor list this year looks pretty modest. The passenger car segment includes 10 Japanese brands (and sub-brands), 2 European, 2 Korean and 1 Chinese brand. Interestingly there were no American brands and big names like Tesla, Ford, GM and Stellantis were missing. Also, many Chinese brands that are now quite popular globally were not at the show. Here are some of the notable displays at the show this year:
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Reveal
Slated for a 2026 launch the much loved FJ will be back into production in its latest avatar that retains elements of its traditional design and blend its with the modern Toyota design language. Honda EV Outlier Electric Motorcycle Concept
The term ‘superbike’ is often associated with a four Japanese icons – the Kawasaki Ninja, Suzuki Hayabusa, Yamaha YZF and the Honda CBR series of bikes. Their European counterparts are the Aprilias and Ducatis from Italy and the BMWs. One of the highlights of the 2025 show was Honda’s showcasing of an electric bike concept that it thinks will be the vision of motorcycling in 2030. Here are a few images. Courtesy: Honda Global


BMW iX3 based on Neue Klasse platform
BMW showcased its first EV using a ground breaking new platform that allows fast charging at 400kW. This platform called Neue Klasse is the company’s first dedicated EV platform that offers 800 volt architecture and a unique cylindrical cell battery design. Below are pics from the show. BYD T35 Electric Truck
BYD showcased a couple of electric models that were very specific for the Japanese market. One was an electric Kei car, a type of ultra mini hatchbacks very common in Japan. The other significant Japan exclusive vehicle showcase from BYD was the T35 electric truck. This purely electric compact sub 3 metre truck will be available in Japan in two configurations – a flatbed and a van. The launch is scheduled for 2026. Here are a few snapshots.
